Transformation
In response to a tapestry 'Water Surface' by David Cochrane, 2006-7,
Dovecot Studios (formerly the Infirmary Street Baths, Edinburgh)

On the wall, the tapestry is a dapple of ivories,
pinks, purples, shades of blue to deepest indigo;
wools blended as threads of artistry.

Close up, it is a dry weave off a frame, more harp
than loom, but from across the balcony, it is
water - spooling, transformed; a memory

of an Edinburgh student who takes the stairs
three at a time, slips into the luxury of a bath,
and a lad who jumps, illicit from the rail

into the pool, smacks the water, a cold thud,
sends it shuddering. They rise as from baptism,
cleansed, trusting their own judgement.
