Union Canal
Here comes a barge again,
Silent and slow.
Yet you remain still
As water can,
Save a solitary soliton.

Not stagnant but constant.
You've known Burke and Hare,
Hugh Baird too.
Now others take their place.
Rowers, walkers even some jumpers
With their greased pole
And hopes of making the other bank.

Centuries may slip by
But you're still here,
With your proud aqueducts
And meandering contours,
Waiting for the next barge.
