Where It Lies
Beneath the fringe of streetlights
the snow is brushed with violet,
recalling heather, thistles
and cups of hot ribena indoors.

A group of children plays outside,
laughing and building forts;
small black figures cut out of gauze.

Somewhere close by is the garish
orange tinsel of Cameron Toll
and the strangle of bypass traffic.

Further off, the snow mimics
the cold flurry of shoppers
who already coat the bridges
with their busy footsteps.

But while the town turns
to slush elsewhere,
under the wheels
and feet of industry,

here is the blank slate;
the quiet white fleece
of suburban snowfall.
