Cinemagoers seethe in a quiet riot
as the Odeon, a big decaying molar
gapes in South Clerk Street's long jaw
an icthyosaur fossilised, beyond the Museum's reach
the village forgotten in its narrow bones
by the time Robert Knox lived there:
Burke and Hare trailing their women up
to the Doctor's own house, Saturday, All-Souls' Day
hungover, grim with the debt for the last of them
I lived there years ago, young and pale
now I dream of the southern slope, waving barley
long straight roads hiding corners
to cover Hare's flight, Knox's ruin.
